Platform:             The Road to City Council

Theme:             “Vote for Representation over Taxation!”

Agenda:          Citizens unite!  We have seen stage presence in the incumbent elected officials.  It is time to elect representation because you deserve more than theatrics.

Taxation increases are becoming an annual event, which is an indication of poor planning and poor oversight.  There are not enough details being disclosed to the public.

Ø      Water and Sewer rate hikes

In 2007, Detroiters were placed under duress to pay higher water and sewer rate increases, 9.2% compared to 3.5%, to offset delinquent water bill payers, when in fact the Water and Sewer utility already had a mechanism in place in the City Code to offset delinquent payers by placing liens against the real property tax bills, which has continued to occur.

This act went unchecked by the then and some current elected officials and represents double dipping in taxation by the government of the people; a disservice to the public.

Vote for the candidate that recognizes your concerns – Walter Cole.

Ø      School mileage increases

In 2005, Detroiters received the news that its City had over collected on a 18-mill tax for Detroit Public Schools, when in fact the school system had not put the tax renewal on the ballot for voter approval – a governmental oversight at the public’s expense.  How many voters have paid this illegally collected tax on commercial, rental or other business property?

This act went unchecked by the then and some current elected officials and represents taxation without representation by the government of the people; another disservice to the public.

Check the name on the ballot that can identify with your concerns – Walter Cole.

Ø      Trash collection fees

In 2006, the City began adding an additional $300 fee for trash collection to your property tax bill.  Your elected City Council members voted 6 to 3 in favor of this increase.  In 2007, outraged Detroit residents brought forth a class action lawsuit that was tossed out by a Wayne County Circuit Court Judge.

Can you as a voter determine whether you were disadvantaged by the $300 fee in lieu of the 3-mill tax for garbage collection, or if the City stopped collecting the 3 mills?

If the incumbent elected officials on City Council have not represented your interest, as a voter you can determine when to set the trash out!  It’s time; Walter Cole is on the ballot to be your representative on City Council.
